How-to Quantification

Pixel values can be more than qualitative values where a brighter pixel shows a stronger signal. Whilst qualitative values may be sufficient if images are to be printed or shared without any further post-processing or analysis, pixel values can be automatically calibrated to real signal values and units if acquisition hardware and software are designed for such measurements. These pixel values are termed quantitative, i.e. quantified to physical values and units.

Automatic quantified signal values in regular images bring a number of benefits

  • extraction of sample physical parameters from images
  • monitoring of sample properties over time/material processing steps
  • direct comparison of sample properties across different microscopes
  • enchanted support of simulation
