File formats
Documentation of own file formats developed at point electronic GmbH, including image and metadata. Use of standard formats is always encouraged, but occasionally something new has the be developed.
Purpose
File formats are very important as they define how digital information is encoded, stored, and interpreted across diverse software and hardware systems. With regards to engineering, they are essential for ensuring data integrity, system interoperability, and efficient automation - without consistent formatting protocols, data exchange between platforms becomes error-prone and unreliable. Existing formats, such as TIF, XML or JSON, already enable image acquisition, metadata encapsulation, and scalable integration with analytical tools and control systems. However, microscopy is an evolving field and new formats have to be introduced.
Metadata
In scientific instrumentation, file formats are particularly critical due to the complexity and precision of the data involved. Microscopes generate high-resolution datasets that must retain calibration parameters, acquisition timestamps, and environmental metadata. Published formats and proprietary instrument-specific schemas ensure compatibility with data processing, facilitate reproducibility, and support regulatory compliance. By embedding metadata and maintaining structural consistency, these formats enable robust traceability, long-term archival, and seamless integration into engineering workflows. Publication of these formats is undertaken here also - information is publicly available.
